Finding Fall in Dallas And Photographing It Before It Fades
As a Dallas family photographer, one of the most common questions I’m asked each year is: Where can we find real fall color in Texas?
Fall in North Texas rarely arrives all at once. Most years, the trees begin to turn from late October into mid-November, although the timing always depends on the weather. And not every beautiful fall backdrop comes with rows of orange leaves. Sometimes it’s tall golden grass, softened greenery, or the kind of warm evening light that makes everything feel a little more like autumn.
When you picture your fall family photos, are you drawn to rich autumn color, an open field wrapped by golden light, or something a little more festive for holiday cards? Each location on this list offers something different, and knowing what you’re most drawn to makes choosing the right setting so much easier.
When Does Fall Color Peak in North Texas?
Fall has its own timeline in North Texas. We may begin seeing the first changes toward the end of October, but the richer color usually appears sometime in November. Warm temperatures, rainfall, and the arrival of our first cooler stretches can move that window from one year to the next.
That’s why I don’t promise a particular shade of leaves on a particular date. Instead, I watch these locations closely and guide each family toward what is photographing most beautifully when their session arrives.
The Best Fall Family Photo Locations Near Dallas and McKinney
1. Arbor Hills Nature Preserve in Plano
Arbor Hills is one of my favorites for families who want a natural setting without traveling far outside of Dallas. The wide trails and tall grasses give little ones room to explore, while the soft, earthy palette photographs beautifully at golden hour. You may not always find dramatic changing leaves here, but you will find plenty of warmth, movement, and space for your family to simply be together.
2. Erwin Park in McKinney
For families searching for where to take fall pictures in McKinney, Erwin Park is a favorite. Located just north of Dallas, this quiet spot comes alive in late October with open meadows, golden trees, and room to roam.
3. Parker Rose Gardens near Allen
Beautiful light. A structured yet natural backdrop. And the calm of a weekday session. It’s one of the best fall photo spots in North Texas for families who want simplicity without sacrificing aesthetic.
4. Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden
The Dallas Arboretum brings fall to life in a way that feels polished, colorful, and unmistakably seasonal. Between the pumpkin displays, thoughtfully designed gardens, and festive details, families can enjoy a beautiful autumn backdrop even before the trees across North Texas begin to turn. Since the gardens close earlier than many outdoor locations, this setting is best for families who love its charm and are comfortable planning around the Arboretum’s hours.
5. Farmers Branch Rose Gardens Near Dallas
For neutral fall family backdrops near Dallas, this is a hidden gem. The pampas grass reflects the light in such a soft, golden way — perfect for families drawn to timeless, organic portraits.
6. Oak Point Nature Preserve in Plano
A wonderful choice for family portraits with fall colors in Texas, Oak Point offers wooded paths, wide fields, and warm tones that build beautifully as the season changes.
7. Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center in Denton
This is where autumn comes into full color. From late October through mid-November, Clear Creek offers one of the most vibrant settings for timeless fall family photos in McKinney and beyond.
8. White Rock Lake in Dallas
Around White Rock Lake, there are quiet pockets of open fields, mature trees, and warm seasonal color that photograph beautifully in the fall. As the season settles in, the area begins to take on shades of orange, yellow, red, and earthy brown. I especially love it for families who want space to slow down, move naturally, and be present with one another without feeling surrounded by crowds.

One Final Season of the 12 Days of Christmas
The Dallas Arboretum has announced that 2026 will be the final season of its 12 Days of Christmas gazebos. Beginning November 11, families will have one last opportunity to experience the display that has been part of the garden’s holiday season since 2014. For families who have made this a tradition, or always meant to, I can’t think of a more meaningful year to preserve it in photographs.
