My son just turned nine. And for the first time, he said it out loud: he didn’t want to hang with family this year. He wanted to be with his friends.
I knew this day would come. Still, hearing it said aloud settled into my chest with surprising weight. It wasn’t rejection, it was growth. And while a piece of me quietly ached, another part remembered last year, when I first began grieving the end of the baby days. That experience softened the edges of this one. It prepared me.
As a Frisco family photographer and a mother, I’ve learned that these transitions are not the end of something, they’re the beginning of something new.
I realized I had a choice: to resist this new chapter or to welcome it with open arms.

While the sweetness of early childhood is fading, the innocence remains. And in its place, something new is blooming a richness I hadn’t expected. This chapter isn’t lesser. It’s simply different.
There’s a shared language forming between us now: jokes that actually land, conversations that linger. We’re bonding over “old school” favorites I grew up with, and it fills me with joy to see him find delight in the very things that shaped my own childhood.
And there’s beauty in the mundane, too. He’s started helping me around the house not because he has to, but because he wants to. Folding laundry side by side, tackling little DIY projects, even just chatting while we cook these small moments feel like gifts. They remind me that connection doesn’t fade; it just shifts form.
I know there will be more moments like this, milestones that ask me to let go of what was and lean into what’s unfolding. And while that might come with a quiet ache, it also comes with wonder.
Because every chapter in motherhood holds its own kind of beauty. We only need to be present enough to see it.
Take heart. If your child is growing more independent or beginning to pull away, it’s not the end of connectionnit’s an invitation to rediscover it. This season may look different, but it’s full of opportunities for joy, meaning, and deepening your bond in unexpected ways.
And if you’re ready to honor this chapter in your family’s story through timeless, heartfelt imagery, I’d be honored to help you preserve it. As a Frisco family photographer, my work is rooted in capturing the moments that matter mostm the ones that mark transition, growth, and togetherness. Whether you’re looking for natural family portraits in Frisco, TX or simply want to pause time for a moment, I’m here to help you preserve your legacy.

Why We Choose Experiences Over Gifts Some of our fondest family memories have come not from what we unwrapped, but from the moments we shared. My kids, now 6 and 9 light up when they retell their favorite adventures: the trip to Sedona, a stargazing dome in Terlingua, a friend’s birthday party, or even a […]

The Soft Weight of a Head on Your Shoulder It’s always the in-between moments. The soft weight of your child resting their head on your shoulder as the world spins just a little too fast. There’s something sacred about beginning the week in stillness—with intention, not anxiety. In a world that pushes hustle, God gently invites us to rest. Not as a reward for finishing the list, but as a way of being rooted in Him from the start. Each Monday, I sit down for a “Business Meeting with God”—not […]
