There is nothing quite as frustrating as taking the time to prepare for your outdoor family photos. Your skin is glowing, your outfit is perfect, your confidence is high. Then you step outside and feel the heat instantly melt everything away. Foundation slips. Concealer creases. That soft glow quickly becomes unwanted shine. It’s distracting. And unfortunately, it’s very much a Texas reality.
After years of photographing families in the Dallas and McKinney sun, one truth has become clear, outdoor photoshoot makeup tips are essential in this climate. From base to finish, every product matters.
If you’re planning a family portrait session and want your makeup to look just as polished in the final images as it did in the mirror, here are the products and techniques that consistently perform, even on the hottest, most humid days.
Every long wearing makeup look starts with a well prepped base. The right primer not only helps makeup adhere properly, but also smooths texture and significantly extends wear time. Here are some of my tried and true favorites.
Powder is key to locking everything in,but here’s the thing, less is more. The goal is to reduce excess shine while still allowing skin to feel alive and dimensional.
Pressed powders are great for setting your full face of makeup while I recommend intentional application of loose powders in areas that you want to “highlight” and bring forward. For instance, under the eyes, center of your forehead, your chin. You can apply in each zone or only the zones you want to highlight the most. If you’re on the drier side, don’t be afraid to reintroduce hydration with a glycerin based mist. It brings your skin back to life without disturbing the base.
The final must have! Setting spray! A good one forms a protective veil that keeps everything in place, through sweat, humidity, and even water. It’s the invisible hero that ensures your makeup lasts as long as your memories.
Okay! So it’s Spring and your allergies are prone to acting up, consider taking allergy medicine the day of your shoot. One that has proven to be effective for you. This will keep the water eyes at bay during your session. And as an extra just in case, here are some waterproof mascaras I recommend.
Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash
Maybelline Lash Sensational Sky High Waterproof Mascara
If makeup isn’t typically part of your everyday routine, hiring a professional makeup artist for your session can be a meaningful way to elevate the experience. Even the most subtle looks benefit from expert application and product knowledge. Your skin will photograph beautifully, and you’ll feel polished without ever feeling overdone.
That said, for the mothers who choose to do their own makeup, the above recommendations are a dependable starting point. When your makeup is thoughtfully applied and well set, the Texas heat becomes far less intimidating. Your beauty shines through. Your confidence holds. And your portraits reflect the very best version of you.
Ready to plan a portrait session that honors you and your story?
Whether you’re in Dallas, McKinney, or the surrounding area, I would be honored to create timeless images that feel as beautiful and effortless as you are.

Why Your Photos Deserve to Live Off the Screen As a Dallas family photographer, I often hear a quiet confession from mothers after their session:“I haven’t printed any of our photos in years.” In a world where we scroll, swipe, and save everything to the cloud, it’s easy to let our most cherished images live […]
