The warmth and pop of color that permeates springtime make this one of my favorite seasons of the year – especially for photo sessions! Photographing families amongst nature’s backdrop of blossoming flowers is so dreamlike during this time of the year that it’s easily the most popular time to book a family photo session. For timeless, beautiful images it’s important to consider the Spring family photo outfits you all will wear, as this plays a major role in the outcome of your photos. Here are some tips on selecting the perfect outfits for your family photos.
Observe Nature for your Spring Family Photo Outfits
My favorite piece of advice to give families when planning outfits for their photo session, is to observe nature during the time of year. During the spring in Texas, we begin to experience grass and foliage turning green again from the winter’s pale beige or nakedness. The excitement and anticipation for the state’s bluebonnets begin to brew! Soft greens, lavenders, baby pinks, and blues are sprinkled across the Texan landscape. Wearing soft neutrals that complement nature in spring make for vibrant, timeless imagery.
Chill on the Bold Colors & Patterns
A general rule of thumb for your spring family photo outfits is to leave the bold wardrobe choices at home. Bold colors tend to reflect poorly on skin tones, and it’s nearly impossible to correct during post-editing. Bold prints are distracting and take the attention away from your family’s beautiful smiles. Opt for dainty prints instead and choose neutral colors that coordinate well with each other. Mixing and matching solid neutrals is nearly fail-proof and is great for expressing everyone’s individuality while still complementing each other. Tempted to wear matching outfits? Make Sure Everyone Is Comfortable
It is important to make sure that everyone is comfortable in their outfits so they feel confident when being photographed. If possible, allow each person to pick out an item or two (shoes/accessories) that they feel good wearing! If you want to match as a family but don’t want everyone wearing identical outfits, choose a focal neutral color for everyone to incorporate into their look then add different colored sweaters, tops, or accessories for each person. This way you’ll have a cohesive look without being too matchy-matchy! As always, moms are more than welcome to borrow a dress from my client closet to wear for their session. I offer some great options perfect for Spring!
